About the project & role:
The project analyses the epistemic, political, practical and ethical implications of the increased production of data and data analytics for border security. It develops an innovative analysis of how data is generated in border encounters, how it circulates among actors and how it shapes the knowledge and practices of border security and non-governmental actors, and migrants themselves.
The post holder will be working with Professor Claudia Aradau to use digital methods for text analysis and visualisation, and to support the development of a web app with external developers. This is an exciting opportunity for interdisciplinary research with and about data.
Applications are welcome from candidates with a background in critical data studies and associated areas of data science, information science, digital humanities, computational social science or digital sociology.
The post will be offered on a full-time basis for 12 months or as part-time time contract at 75% FTE for 18 months. The last possible end date for the contract is 31 May 2024.
Key responsibilities
Develop digital methods for the project, as agreed with the PI
Develop specifications for digital development work sub-contracted on the project
Write up the results of empirical research
Present findings to diverse audiences at national and international conferences, and at project events
Assist the PI with administrative and organizational tasks
Assist the PI with dissemination and communication tasks for the project
Contribute to the project goals by participating in project meetings, writing up reports and contributing to research publications for the project, either collaboratively or independently
Work with colleagues on the project team on research design and contribute to implementing it
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria
1. PhD in a relevant field
2. Experience with developing and using digital methods
3. Excellent research skills on data and datafication
4. Hands-on experience of working with different forms of data
5. Understanding of the ethical and political challenges of datafication
6. Experience working in a team
7. Ability to undertake independent research
8. Excellent writing and communication skills
Desirable criteria
1. Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python or R)
2. Experience with app development or app research
Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. Candidates with equivalent experience will also be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
