Geopolitics of risk: governing uncertainty through technology

Dr Sarah Perret will be delivering a talk on ‘Geopolitics of risk: governing uncertainty through technology' (based on her book with J. Peter Burgess) on Friday 1st July 2022 at the University of Trento's workshop on 'Geopolitics & Changing States'.

Abstract of talk:

The intensification of globalisation and the multiplication of technological solutions to human problems have given rise to new geopolitical issues and challenges, especially for states. It is in this environment that the question of risk has become central to geopolitical concerns, decompartmentalising territories, disciplines and above all imaginations, and making our societies increasingly prey to uncertainty. What is meant by 'risk'? Why has it become an indispensable concept in geopolitical thinking? Security, environment, finance, health, energy, digital... risk and its management have become an integral part of many areas of our societies, both at the disciplinary and actor level. This culture of risk has given rise to new issues that involve not only state and international actors, but also those of a private sector increasingly focused on digital technologies. This presentation focuses on the effects of the transnationalisation, politicisation and construction of the threat in our contemporary societies.

The workshop will take place on the 1st and 2nd July 2022. Details and instructions for registering can be found here.
